article12nd Annual BOBBYSTRONG Family Fun Walk and Run was held on June 6, 2015 at Tully Park in Meridian, Idaho.   This event is organized and hosted by the tremendous volunteers of Buckle Up for Bobby to honor the lives of those lost in motor vehicle crashes and to promote healthy choices.

It was a beautiful day for a short run or walk with friends and family!  Vendors arrived to set up their booths well before 8:00 AM.   Super Heroes of all ages arrived ready to join us in our event “Saving Lives One Choice at a Time”.   Dutch Bros Coffee was onsite to provide a little pre-event beverage for checking out the various vendors and activities.

We kicked off the event with a welcome by Ken Corder with the Meridian Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council.  Founders, Duke and Sheri Rogers welcomed everyone and kicked off a brief pre-walk program.  Our announcer and DJ was the world famous, “OG” Officer Gomez, School Resource Officer and Internet Safety Expert for the Meridian Police Department.   Sgt. John Gonzales was asked to join Mr. Corder and Officer Gomez for a brief ceremony naming each of them a Captain of the Noodle Knocker.  They were each awarded the symbol of their high offices (a colorful swimming pool noodle) and given the authority to “knock noodles” in the name of safety.   Families and friends of those lost to motor vehicle crashes gathered together for a moment of honor and remembrance.  The group joined in prayer and then launched several colorful balloons into the clear morning sky.

The crowd proceeded to the soccer fields in the northwest corner of Tully Park where the Captains of the Noodle Knocker organized their troop.  All runners and walkers proceeded through a tunnel of “noodle knockers” to ensure everyone understands the need to buckle their seatbelt and make healthy choices.  The run/walk followed along the Bud Porter Memorial Path between Lindarticle1aer and Meridian Roads.  Everyone made 2+ mile walk/run and returned to the park for the rest of our celebration. They were greeted along the finish line by the royalty from a variety of pageant programs donning their beautiful crowns and sashes as well as other colorful characters such as members of the El Korah Shriners and a variety of Super Heroes led by Rob Cook as Captain America!  The winners of each age group were given a prize package provided by Shu’s Running Company.   Water bottles, snacks and safety information were provided to all participants and they were free to roam through the health and safety vendor area, jump in the bounce houses, dance to the tunes of OG and participate in our fundraising activities.

The highlight of the day was the awarding of the 2015 Bobby Rogers/Tiffany Walters Memorial Scholarships to six deserving students. Each received a $1000.00 college scholarship and a gift basket full of college essentials.

It was a wonderful day to honor the lives of those lost in motor vehicle crashes and join together as a community to turn our adversity into action.

Sending out a HUGE Thank You to all vendors, donors and participants! Without you this day could not happen! Thank you for helping us promote safety and honor those who will be “forever young”.
